The CHIME Plugin

What is CHIME?

CHIME is a special visualization tool created by MDL Information Systems that allows web-browsers to view and do simple manipulations on 3-dimensional models of chemical structures. Dr Mathews' 3-D images (.pdb files) will appear most prominently in Lesson 3, so you have a bit of time to take care of this, but don't wait too long or you'll miss your chance to see coal, gasoline, carbon, crystals, pollutants and other structures up close and personal.

Getting CHIME

If you are working from a Penn State computer lab, CHIME should already be there, and you can see the rotating image below.

You can load CHIME into your browser in one of two ways. The easiest would be to simply install the program from your course CD, where you'll find a CHIME folder containing the installer program, copyright statements, directions for installing it, and additional notes on how to use the program.

The alternative method is to go to the CHIME website and follow their download and installation instructions. You'll need to use your email address to register with MDL to do this.

After loading the plugin, you'll want to refresh your page.

If there is a rotating object in a black box below this, you're already set. Hold down on your left mouse button and move it around to rotate the object; Right click on the object to see and play with the other available 3-D options.
