John A. Dutton e-Education Institute

Web-Based Classes at University Park
Spring 2004

Jonathan P. Mathews, Fellow of the John Dutton e-Education Institute, College of EMS

The following information was obtained in October of 2003. Currently at University Park (excluding World Campus) students can sign up for 26 classes that are web-based, having the designation "WEB" in the registrar's list of course offerings. Using the maximum enrollment of 50 students as the cutoff between small and large classes, there are 13 small classes, most being 400-level classes. Of the 13 large classes, all but one are 100-level or below. The College of EMS is well represented with 5 online classes spanning 4 departments. Of the maximum available "virtual seats," the e-Education Institute has 37% of the total. Currently, the students enrolled in e-Education Institute/department classes are 11% of the web-based enrollment (this figure is affected by the ability of lower level student to registrar). This number is likely to increase as the Fall semester cumulates.

There are 4 GN designated classes. All but one of the classes are e-Education supported, the exception being "The Human Body." There are 5 GA designated classes and one health and physical activity, "Contemporary Nutrition Concerns." There are also two classes with the GH/GI designation: "World Religion" & "Culture and Civilization."

I note that both Spring ART classes are full very early in the Fall semester.

This semester (Fall 2003), there were 20 web classes offered at UP.

From data gathered in the Fall of 2003, 16% of my web class enrollment (EGEE 101) who answered a questionnaire, had previously taken a web class (26 students). Clearly if we are to prepare our students for life-long learning, having taken a web class at Penn State with positive experiences would serve our students and Penn State's future growth in that area. The maximum number of students who will be served via web class in the Spring 2004 is 2,083 (based on maximum virtual seats). Clearly, we are still serving a small portion of the undergraduate population.
