Summary
The Nile has been a mysterious and powerful force in the lives of men and women for over seven thousand years. It is remarkable that the mystery of the Nile was not discovered until essentially modern times. Earlier theories for the origin of the rain-fed river in the desert environment give us lovely insight into the minds and societies that have come before our own. In the next unit we will see how the Nile has been tamed by the construction of the Aswan Dam in Southern Egypt. We'll explore the benefits and problems associated with the dam and evaluate the 1959 Water Agreement between Egypt and the Sudan that outlines the current allocation of the precious waters of the Nile.
