Lesson 11: Natural Resources

Discussion Forum: Cocoa and Change

Annenberg/CPB has created an excellent set of streaming instructional videos relating to "The Power of Place: Geography for the 21st Century." One of the half-hour films is titled "Developing Countries ." The video starts with "Cote d'Ivoire: Cocoa and Change," a look at the world's largest producer of cocoa with economic downturns and loss of its historically stable government. The second part of the video discusses "Gabon: Sustainable Resources?"—how one of Africa's wealthiest countries is suffering from declining oil revenues, putting new pressure on the country's timber resources. Note that the second video is not part of the discussion forum assignment, but is an interesting environmental discussion and dilemna.
