Lesson 13-14: Capstone Exercise

Capstone Exercise Instructions

Introduction

This document provides instructions for participants in the Geography 882 Capstone Exercise. You will operate in the Atlantica Virtual Space. Conduct all of your business in the appropriate area (your offices or general meeting spaces) so that the observer controllers may observe and evaluate your efforts, and provide mentorship (and perhaps some hints). The virtual offices and meeting places are discussion forums. Offices are only accessible to team-members and thus facilitate closed discussions not visible to other teams. Open meeting spaces are visible to everyone. You may use the course email to conduct offline discussions, however, you should cc the instructor if you wish to receive credit for the effort.

Schedule

There are four major tasks spread over the two week period. You may divide the work among team members as some tasks involve sub-tasks that can be done concurrently. Sometimes you will have to cover for a team member who is travelling or otherwise not available. We expect this to happen and accept this fact because this happens in real life. All deliverables are group products.

Communications Format

You will send written communications in simplified memo form as follows:

TO: The person of organization that is the addressee

DATE:

FROM: The person or organization sending the memo

RE: (as in Regarding) The subject of the message

  • Part one of the message in the first paragraph
  • Part two of the message in the second paragraph
  • Part three of the message in the third paragraph and so on…

Signature Line

You will often have to correspond with role players and the observer/controller. It is essential that your memos be clear in who they are from, who they are for, and that the text be clear, concise, and short. This memo format can be used either for discussion posts where a written communication is simulated, emails, or attachments. This format is not necessary during meetings and negotiations where a face to face discussion is simulated.
